Celebrate Sourdough Month with Homemade Artisan Bread 🥖
September is officially Sourdough Month—a whole month dedicated to celebrating one of the oldest and most beloved breads in the world. With its tangy flavor, chewy texture, and golden, crackly crust, sourdough has been enjoyed for centuries. What makes it unique is its natural fermentation process, which develops flavor, texture, and even makes it easier to digest.
Whether you’re an experienced baker or just beginning your sourdough journey, September is the perfect time to roll up your sleeves, feed your starter, and bake a fresh loaf. Few things are more rewarding than slicing into warm, homemade sourdough fresh from your own oven.
🍞 Homemade Sourdough Bread Recipe
Ingredients
- ⅔ cup active sourdough starter (160 g)
- 1⅓ cups warm water (314 g)
- 4¼ cups all-purpose flour (510 g)
- 2 teaspoons salt (12 g)
Instructions
1. Mix the Dough
In a large bowl, combine sourdough starter, warm water, flour, and salt. Stir with a spatula or your hands until no dry spots remain. The dough will be sticky and shaggy. Cover with a damp towel or plastic wrap and let rest 30–45 minutes.
2. Stretch, Fold & Bulk Rise
With wet hands, grab one side of the dough, stretch it upward, and fold it over the center. Rotate and repeat 3 more times. Repeat this process 2 more times, spaced 30 minutes apart (3 rounds total). After the final fold, cover and let the dough rise at room temperature until puffy and nearly doubled—about 4–6 hours.
3. Shape & Proof
Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface. Gently shape into a round, then place seam-side up in a floured proofing basket or towel-lined bowl.
- Overnight option: Cover and refrigerate 8–12 hours for deeper flavor and easier scoring.
- Quick option: Proof at room temperature for 1–3 hours, until puffy and airy.
4. Score & Bake
Place a Dutch oven (with lid) in your oven and preheat to 475°F for at least 30 minutes.
Remove dough from the fridge, invert onto parchment paper, and score the top with a sharp knife or lame. Carefully transfer to the hot Dutch oven. Lightly spritz with water.
Bake covered for 20 minutes, then uncover and bake another 20–25 minutes, until the crust is deep golden and crisp. Cool on a wire rack completely before slicing.
